How to Write a Plumbing Quote That Wins the Job
Plumbing quotes get compared. Here's how to make yours stand out without racing to the bottom on price — with the right structure, right detail, and right delivery.
Plumbing is one of the most quoted trades in the UK. Every homeowner with a dripping tap, a dodgy boiler, or a bathroom refit is getting two or three quotes before they decide. Which means your quote isn't just a price — it's competing.
Here's how to write a plumbing quote that wins more work without cutting your rates.
Be Specific About What's Included
The number one reason plumbing quotes get rejected or queried is vagueness. "Install new bathroom — £4,500" tells the customer nothing. Which bathroom suite? Who's supplying the tiles? Is the tiling included? What about the flooring? What about making good after? When they can't see what they're getting, they compare the number and yours will always be someone else's cheap option.
Instead: "Supply and fit Grohe Eurosmart basin mixer, Hansgrohe Croma shower set, connect to existing waste, test. Customer supplying basin and toilet. Labour — 1.5 days. Materials (fittings and sealant) — £85. Labour — £420." Now they can see exactly what they're paying for.
Break Out Boiler Quotes Properly
Boiler replacement is probably the highest-value single job in most plumbers' quote books. These quotes get scrutinised. The customer has usually Googled average costs. Break it down: boiler model and output, flue type and kit, any additional parts (filter, TRVs, new programmer), labour days, and a note about what happens to the old boiler.
Include your Gas Safe registration number. On a gas job, this is not optional — it tells the customer you're qualified, and it covers you legally.
State What's Not Included
Plastering, decorating, floor reinstatement — if it's not in your quote, say so. "Making good after pipework not included" is not a sneaky get-out clause. It's fair and transparent. The customer knows what they need to budget for separately, you're protected from scope creep, and there's no nasty conversation at the end of the job.
Include Your Warranties
A 12-month labour warranty. The manufacturer's warranty on the boiler or parts you've fitted. These matter to customers. They're paying a lot of money and they want to know they've got some comeback if something goes wrong. Put it in writing — it builds trust and it costs you nothing if you've done the job properly.
Follow Up on Big Jobs
For a bathroom refit or boiler replacement, the customer might be comparing three or four quotes and discussing it with a partner. Give it three or four days and then send a polite follow-up. "Just checking you received the quote okay and happy to answer any questions" is enough. Don't be pushy, but don't assume silence is a no.
The best plumbing quotes win because they're clear, professional, and make the customer feel confident. Confidence, not cheapness, is what closes most jobs.
What About Emergency Call-Out Quotes?
Emergency work is different. The customer needs someone now, so speed and availability trump everything else. A quick professional quote within minutes — even just showing labour rate and any materials — is far better than nothing. Always confirm call-out charges and hourly rates upfront to avoid any nasty surprises for the customer.
